kitten Lucy needs a loving home!

I am desperately searching for a loving home for Lucy. If you or anyone you know is interested. Please get in touch! My contact info is listed below:

Lucy is a 3 year old white "kitten" with gray patches. I have had her since she was a 8 weeks old. She was rescued at 2 weeks old . Her rescuers believed that her mother died or was injured soon after her and her brother Linus were born. She was in foster care being nursed back to health for the first 8 weeks of her life. Because she didn't get mother's milk, she is very small for a full grown cat and still looks like a kitten. She is definitely a people cat, the way many cats are who are weaned early, but she is not clingy, in fact quite independent.

She was adopted from Pets Unlimited on Fillmore where she was spayed and got a microchip. She is fully immunized and had just had a vet check up and is healthy. She is currently/indoor outdoor cat. Her food of choice is dry Whiskas. She needs to sleep indoors at night and likes to go out to play and sunbathe during the day if outdoors is accessible. She loves chasing a laser pointer and jumping to catch toys with feathers. She is very affectionate once you get to know her, but takes a little bit to warm up. She has been an only cat for the majority of her life and though she can eventually get used to other cats in her environment, she does experience some anxiety around that due in most part to being much smaller than most other cats.

She need a new home because I recently moved in with my partner and he's just not a cat person. Unfortunately Lucy's presence is having disastrous affects on our otherwise amazing relationship which is not healthy for any of the 3 of us!

RIp Elvis 1989-2007

Our dear cat Elvis passed away last night in his sleep - he was almost 18 years old.

I got him when I was right out of college and just getting started in the world. I have known him longer than my husband and most of my friends!

I am really sad about losing him, but at the same time I know it was for the best. He lived a long full life and was much loved, and now he is with his dearly departed buddy Tipper.

So drink a toast (or pass the 'nip) tonight in his honor!

Numerous invitations have been extended to you to discuss the topic of animal experimentation since you moved to Atlanta and Yerkes Primate Center in 2001.

To date, you and President Wagner have chosen to ignore any letters or e-mails about this topic. It has not escaped our notice you participated in a public discussion about animal experiments on the television show, 'Third Thursday’ with Sally Mackler, the late Cleveland Amory and Jack Carone----all of whom oppose using animals in research and none of which are medical doctors.

It is also well-known that Emory/Yerkes staged a gathering a few years ago for approximately 150 people, many of which where connected with the media to discuss this topic, none of which were trained medical professionals who disagree with you or the Emory administration.

We seem to have detected a pattern here. You are ready, willing and able to discuss this topic with students (the leverage there quite apparent), those with whom you agree, and those with no medical training.

We would once again like to issue the same invitation.

Primate Freedom Project would like to invite you or your designee to discuss this topic with a physician of our choosing.

The discussion would be limited exclusively to the scientific merits of non-human experimental models. Animal rights, ethics and other non-scientific issues would not qualify for discussion in this forum. Only trained, medical professionals would be invited to participate. Emory and Yerkes can designate the location, time, date and all the rules of the discussion. We would require the discussion be open to all media and Emory University students.

Cat Experiments at Emory

Richard Nichols' NIH grant continues thru 2007.

Richard Nichols' decerebrate cat experiments began in 1983 and have been duplicated around the country numerous times and is described in the February 1999 issue of the Journal of Neurophysiology which has included 32 cats that were used to study muscle reflexes. The cat's throats are pierced so a tube can keep them breathing during the experiment. Nichols severs the brain from the spinal cord, and the cat's temperature is maintained by a rectal temperature controller and a heat lamp. Two steel pins welded to metal blocks are inserted into the cat's hind legs. Some of the muscles and nerves in the legs are exposed so Nichols can stimulate the nerves. Tendons are fitted with small clamps for attachment to torque motors. The posterior tibial nerve is freed near the ankle in both limbs for stimulation. The limb is immobilized using hip pins attached to the stereotaxic frame, and the bone pins and an ankle clamp are fixed to a mechanical ground by magnetic bases. At the end of the experiment, the cat is euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital. Nichols has published 22 reports about various experiments and 17 other studies including cockroach senses.

Nichols' began torturing cats in 1983 and has received grants from the NIH all
these years. Just the latest grant for cruelty totals $318,431.00.

To date, Nichols' experiment has produced NOTHING to help sick
humans but has enriched the purse of Emory and Nichols. This is a complete
waste of valuable research dollars that should be directed to proven experimental
models, not chicanery.

The FOX Theatre will again be hosting the musical CATS and we are hoping to get as many people as possible on the public sidewalk in front of the FOX to distribute leaflets and let the public know about Emory's lies. Just a few years ago, we distributed so many leaflets that Emory was forced to answer to the public. One of their responses was to develop several web pages explaining how terrific their cat experiments are and they went on to tell the public that Nichols served in the military---as if that has something to do with the validity of this experiment.

Here's the plan:

This is not a protest but a peaceful, legal leafletting. We are going to educate the public about Emory's cat experiments and hopefully place a leaflet in each and every hand going in the FOX Theatre that night. We will have signs available for those who prefer not leaflet. If anyone wants to argue with you or pick a fight, don't waste your time---they are on a mission, maybe they work at Emory etc., and you have more important things to do---like educate people who have an open mind.

Please arrive at the Fox at 6:30pm. There's parking all around or take the bus--whatever is easiest for you. We will continue until 8:00 pm when the show starts. Remember not to block anyone going in or out of the Theatre or on the sidewalk---they always have a policeman there to remind you if you do and he's always nice so don't worry about that. This is a public sidewalk and you have a right to be there. We are always very busy---people are taking leaflets faster than we can distribute them---that's not an exaggeration so your help is seriously needed.

This is a golden opportunity to help cats and educate the public. Leafletting dates are Jan. 17, 18, 21 and 22. That's a Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday so everyone should have a chance to fit at least one in their schedule.

As you know, CATS is known for their spectacular costumes and if you want to dress as a cat, paint your face etc., that would be extra cool. CANTON Margaret Hughes first noticed a gray cat in her 10th Street NW
neighborhood about two years ago.

Tugging at her heartstrings, the feline cried for attention and begged
for something to eat.

Unable to resist, Hughes set a food bowl outside her house. A pillow
and blanket were tucked into a wicker basket for a bed. She named the
cat Ghost, and limited the animal to the outdoors since she had an
indoor cat.

Another cat entered the picture later. She fed that one, too, once in
the morning and once in the late afternoon.

"I was just trying to save the cats from starving to death," Hughes said.

Then the 69-year-old got a notice from the Canton Health Department on
Jan. 6 ordering her to stop feeding the cats and to remove the bed. If
she doesn't comply by Monday, Hughes would be expected to show up for
a hearing, and could face up to a $100 fine and 90 days in jail, said
Law Director Joseph Martuccio.

"They always seek voluntary cooperation," Martuccio said.

Hughes, meanwhile, sees little harm in feeding the cats, saying she's
"trying to do something humane."

"I felt bad for the cats because they're on a porch meowing," she
said. "They're hungry, and I fed them."

Still, Hughes said, she's complying with the order, removing the food
bowl and bed.

(Jackie Godbey of the Humane Society in the following quote sounds more
like a dogcatcher than a humane society official)

Food dishes can attract raccoons, skunks and rats, he said. Food left
for cats also can lead to a colony of the four-legged creatures, said
Jackie Godbey, assistant director of the Stark County Humane Society.

The city and county health departments do not pick up strays. Neither
does the Stark County dog warden's office, which refers inquiries
about stray cats to the Stark County Humane Society.

The Humane Society accepts cats and puts them up for adoption, Godbey
said.

"They are the most important resource we have for cats," Wade said of
the agency.

People who have strays or want to get rid of a cat should not dump
them in rural parts of the county, Godbey said.

"They'll see a barn, a farm and they'll take (cats there), and they
don't think that 800 people have done that (in the same area) over the
years," she said.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that a Canadian cow that tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as “mad cow disease”) may have been used to manufacture dry dog food, some of which was reported to have been shipped to the United States.

The Canadian government prevented the BSE positive cow from being processed for human food.

3. The European Union has banned the practice of putting female hormones,
carcinogens, in the food of cows,
sheep, pigs etc. However the US government has not.

4. There are many more carcinogens (cancer causing agents)
in the environment. Factory farms and feedlots dump trillions of gallons
of urine and feces into the water systems of the planet.

5. The hazards of antibiotics injected into 'food' animals
are not known.

The health hazards of commercial meat-based pet foods are extensive, and difficult to avoid. They may include slaughterhouse waste products; 4-D meat (from dead, dying, diseased or disabled animals); old or spoiled supermarket meat; large numbers of rendered dogs and cats from animal shelters; old restaurant grease, complete with high concentrations of dangerous free radicals and trans fatty acids; damaged or spoiled fish, complete with dangerous levels of mercury, PCBs and other toxins; pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi and prions, and their associated endotoxins and mycotoxins; hormone and antibiotic residues; and dangerous preservatives. The combined results are rendered so delicious to cats and dogs by the addition of ‘digest’ - a soup of partially dissolved chicken entrails - that more than 95 % of companion animals subsist primarily on commercial meat-based diets

Fish are at the top of the ocean food chain and concentrate arsenic,
chromium, mercury, pcb's, pvc's, pbb's, lead, and tens of thousands
of other toxins dumped into the ocean. Rachel Carson wrote
that fish flesh concentrates poisons at rates of 100 to 1000 times
the concentration in the seawater or lakewater.

MAD FISH DISEASE

Factory farmed fish are being fed bone meal, which causes
piscean spongiform encephalopathy or Mad Fish Disease

Prions are so contagious that gardeners, Japanese, British
and others have gotten Mad Cow from contact with bone
meal put on their roses.

Prions are ending up in the ocean as well.

STOMACH CANCER

Japan, Korea, Chile, and other heavy fish consumers are in the
top 5 in stomach cancer, an excruciating disease.

The natural life expectancy of a dog or cat is sometimes double
or triple what the average dog or cat lives..
Vegetarian dogs and cats live into their 20's

Vegan cats love veggieburgers, and soycheeses. Every one
is different.

OTHER CONCERNS

A diet heavy in fish or meat has high levels of trioxypurine or uric
acid which block the urethras of cats and dogs and cause kidney problems.

SOLUTION

even for cats.

Unsurprisingly, diseases described in the scientific literature following long-term maintenance of cats and dogs on commercial meat-based diets include kidney, liver, heart, neurologic, eye, muscoloskeletal and skin diseases, bleeding disorders, birth defects, immunocompromisation and infectious diseases. As a practicing veterinarian I agree that so-called degenerative diseases such as cancer, kidney, liver and heart failure are far more common than they should be, and that many are likely to be exacerbated or directly caused by the numerous hazardous ingredients of commercial meat-based cat and dog diets.

On the other hand, studies and numerous case reports have shown that nutritionally sound vegetarian companion animal diets appear to be associated with the following health benefits: increased overall health and vitality, decreased incidences of cancer, infections, hypothyroidism, ectoparasites (fleas, ticks, lice and mites), improved coat condition, allergy control, weight control, arthritis regression, diabetes regression and cataract resolution.

Although reports of animals that have been harmed by nutritionally inadequate vegetarian (and meat-based) diets do exist, these are of little scientific relevance to an examination of the viability of nutritionally sound vegetarian diets. There is no scientific reason why a diet comprised only of plant, mineral and synthetically-based ingredients cannot be formulated to meet all of the palatability, nutritional and bioavailability needs of the species for which they are intended. In fact, several commercially-available vegan (no animal product) pet diets claim to do so, and have jointly supported a healthy population of thousands of vegan cats, dogs and ferrets (who are also naturally carnivorous) for many years.

The number of people who have become vegetarian for the sake of the animals, the environment, or their health, is very large (see www.VeganOutreach.org if you’re still unconvinced of the merits of vegetarianism for you and the world around you). The amount of good this has done is barely calculable. Yet most of these caring people nevertheless continue to feed their companion animals meat-based diets, in many cases causing as much harm as if they themselves ate meat (the average medium-sized dog or three cats consumes roughly the same quantity of meat as a human). They choose to do so out of fear of adverse health consequences of vegetarian companion animal diets, and ignorance of how these might be avoided.

California Veterinary Medical Association is filing a lawsuit against the city of West Hollywood to challenge the law that prevents the declawing of cats in that city. There is a gathering to protest this CVMA lawsuit. Details follow...
CVMA FIGHTS FOR THE RIGHT TO MUTILATE

The CVMA has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow, March 6, 2005 at 10 am at Laurel Pet Hospital in West Hollywood (7970 Santa Monica Blvd., 323-654-7060, at Laurel Canyon and Santa Monica Blvds.) to announce their suit against West Hollywood's ban against declawing.

Why the California Veterinary Medical Association wants to spend its time challenging the will of the 37,000 citizens of West Hollywood when it could be working to end pet overpopulation or other serious issues is as puzzling as it is disturbing.

CVMA's British brethren, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, calls declawing "mutilation." Declawing is considered unethical by almost all the veterinarians in the rest of the world.

It would be a shame if protestors spoiled their nice press conference.
